Kaunda Square stage one named after the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda the first Republican president of the Republic of Zambia. It's in reality one of the many places in this country of historical importance and significance but despite all that Kaunda Square in Munali Constituency is the least developed at the same time it is in a deplorable state despite being one of the oldest townships in Lusaka. Compared to Kaunda Square stage two, stage one is a typical example of a pathetic neglected slam and as such it doesn't come anywhere close to its sister stage two thar has been considered for infrastructure development such as tired roads and nice drainages so the place is in a good state unlike stage one.
When you arrive in stage one, you will be greeted by litter, garbage and trash that is usually dumped anywhere and as you can see in the picture above, that's a heap of trash but it may puzzle you to learn that that place is not a garbage dumping site. The dumping site thar is behind Kaunda Square market is a mess an a terrible sight of scenery yet it is just behind a busy market and besides a place called Kadoti where jobless youths spends time drinking from morning until close to midnight. This reporter noticed that despite the condition being terrible dust everywhere, litter, blocked sewer pipes, only two small tarmac's and broken sewer pipes that exposes the human waste in stream like manner the compound is one of the smallest in size which means easier to develop and maintain.
Even though Kaunda square is one of the smallest compounds in Lusa a it's population is quite huge and so if there could arise a disease outbreak such as cholera the people could be affected. Sometime last year this reporter saw the trash from behind the market removed at the word of his worship Mr. Miles Sampa the Lusaka mayor shortly after his election as Lusaka mayor which came after the demise of Patrick Kalumba who was mayor on the same Patriotism Front (PF) ticket. The move was well received as the market looked clean but just a week later they continued dumping trash at the same place despite the mayor forbidding the act of doing so.
Some residents spoken to by this reporter complained that they feel neglected to stay in a place where most of them own houses or have inherited them from the former owners still finds it hard to understand why despite paying ground rates and the council collecting huge levies from shops and market trader as Kaunda Square is one of the good business area where trade is good they wonder why they have been neglected and they see some of the new unplanned settlement such as Bombe compound which is in Mandevu constituency receiving a fair share of development witnessed in good roads and drainages which makes Ngombe which was just like a village in 2010 way better than Kaunda Square which has been growing from bad to worse.
The residents of the area however still believes that the PF government would soon consider to at least work on roads, drainages etc while they appeal to the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company to work on the broken pipes and blocked ones so that the environment becomes better as their greatest wish is to live in a good Kaunda Square and be proud to stay in a place named after the first president and also located in the heart of the Capitol city.
