The youths are without a doubt the future leaders and it has become popular that the youths are the leaders of today. For national development to be achieved and arrived at the youths who are the backbone of any nation in the world are required to play their role accordingly.
But the unfortunate scenario in our country is that the youths have given themselves to excessive alcohol consumption and have forgotten that the nation requires the youths to play their part in the quest to enhance national development. They have been youthful cries from various sections of society accusing the elderly especially the politicians that they are not doing much to accommodate the youths in key leadership and decision making positions while the elderly have defended themselves to say that the youths are not responsible enough to be trusted with the leadership mantle because there is just too much irresponsibility among them. Instead of working so hard to make meaningful contributions the youth rather be at some joint from as early as 06 hours on the morning. What work or contribution can a drunk youth make to the nation? Some leaders have asked.
In defence the youths say they drink because they have no jobs. But others have said joblessness is not reason enough to become drunks. It is just a trap to avoid the reality and the role these youths have to play a certain elder said. Why do we have responsible youths who are starting up businesses or ventures and why are they not giving themselves to alcohol like the majority youths? Another one wondered.
Alcohol abuse has however contributed to youthful deaths, road traffic accidents, high poverty levels and gender based violence in marriages. A certain elder said that if majority youths were drinking as the youths of today during the struggles for independence, Zambia would not have gained her political independence as most of the freedom fighters we have or read about in the history books participated in the struggle during their youthful years but today with the excessive alcohol consumption one may wonder of Zambia is anywhere close to achieving financial independence because the alcohol consumption is way to much while most youth giants are sleeping giants in the sleep of intoxication and drunkenness. An appeal has been made to majority youths to emulate their fellow responsible youths and most ladies have cried out that men are not marrying them while an expert's comment was that its because of drunkeness which makes some men impotent.
