. Zambia has fertile farming land in almost every area of the country for the cultivation of various crops in depending with the area and the crops compatible with the soil in that particular region. In the eastern province for example the soil there is good for the cultivation of cotton, sunflower, groundnuts, tomatoes, bananas, soya beans, maize, cassava etc that is compatible with the eastern soil and which is are mostly grown as a result. The northern province and Luapula have fertile soil best for the growth of cassava, tea, sweet potatoes, irish potatoes, coffee, sugar cane, rice, beans, soya beans, millet, sorghum, maize, tomatoes etc and theseven regions also promotes fish farming and bird farming and has a lot of water bodies in place to support irrigation activities when the rain season goes. Central and Muchinga provinces are most like the northern and Luapula except for fact that the soil is very fertile in areas like Mukushi, Serenje, Kapiri Mposhi which supports the farming of other crops and attracted large scale commercial farmers especially the white farmers. Lusaka province and Southern province have fertile lands for maize, beans and almost anything else that can be grown and on top of that they support the large scale farming of wheat, barley, cotton, etc and supports animals husbandry and fish farming. Western province is great on rice, potatoes while North Western and Copper Belt provinces supporta maize and other crops smiler to Luapula province.
The challenge that agricultural has been facing is the issue of no alternative irrigation technologies to rely on for back up aside from the rains which start somewhere in October and end in March-April at most. Dependably on the rains has started failing most farmers especially the small scale farmers and peasant farmers who totally depends on the rains for the irrigation of their crops. With recent climate change that has been affecting the rainfall in most provinces except for the Northern, Luapula and Central province. The farmers are now advised to utilise other irrigation technologies and go about what is called crop diversification so as to be on the safe side. The plant a tree programme that was launched by late president Satan needs to be encouraged while the cutting of trees for the Chitemene system and charcoal burning be discouraged so an appeal to government and other relevant authorities is to support the programme aimed at eliminating Chitemene system and charcoal burning as people can survive without charcoal and Chitemene system of farming Zambians can not survive without food.
